If you own a pool anywhere along the Florida Panhandle, hurricane season isn’t an abstract idea. It runs from June 1 to November 30 every year, it peaks between mid-August and mid-October, and anyone who was in Bay County for Hurricane Michael in 2018 doesn’t need reminding of what a major storm can do. We service pools every week across Panama City, Panama City Beach, Lynn Haven, Chipley, Inlet Beach, and Santa Rosa Beach, and every summer we see the same pattern: pools that were prepared sensibly bounce back within days, and pools that weren’t can take weeks — or need a full restart.

The good news is that preparing a pool for a storm is neither expensive nor complicated. Most of it is about knowing what not to do — and a few of the most common instincts, like draining the pool or throwing the patio furniture in it, are exactly the ones that cause the worst damage. Here’s the full picture: what to do before the storm, what to leave alone during it, and how to bring your pool back afterwards.

Before the Storm: Preparing Your Pool

When a storm is named and the cone starts appearing on local forecasts, your pool should be well down your priority list — after your family, your home, and your evacuation plan. The pool prep itself takes an hour or two at most. Here’s what actually matters.

Do not drain your pool

This is the single most important rule of hurricane pool care, so it comes first. It feels logical — less water, less overflow — but an empty or partially drained pool is in far more danger than a full one. When heavy rain saturates the ground, hydrostatic pressure builds beneath the pool shell. The weight of the water inside is what holds the structure in place. Drain it, and that pressure can lift the entire shell — a “popped” pool — cracking plumbing, tearing decking, and turning a storm inconvenience into a five-figure structural repair.

A full pool is a stable pool. The water protects the shell from lifting and shields the finish from flying debris. Leave the water level right where it normally sits — your deck drains and the surrounding ground will handle the overflow from rain.

Shut off power to the equipment

Turn off the circuit breakers for the pump, chlorinator, and any other pool equipment before the storm arrives. Running equipment during a power surge or flood is how motors get destroyed. If your equipment pad sits in a low spot and storm-surge or flood maps put your neighborhood at risk, it’s worth going further: wrapping the pump motor in waterproof plastic tied securely in place, or having it temporarily disconnected and moved somewhere dry.

Give the water a chemical head start

A storm is about to dump huge amounts of rainwater, debris, and contaminants into your pool, all of which consume chlorine rapidly. Shock the pool a day or so before the storm arrives and let the pump run a full circulation cycle while you still have power. Going into the storm with strong sanitizer levels is the difference between cloudy water afterwards and a full green bloom.

Clear the deck — but not into the pool

Patio furniture, umbrellas, toys, planters, and pool maintenance gear all become projectiles in hurricane winds. Store them indoors or in a garage. You may have heard the old advice to sink furniture in the pool to keep it from blowing away — we don’t recommend it. Metal furniture stains and corrodes against the pool finish, hard edges chip plaster and tile, and every item you fish out afterwards has been steeping in your water chemistry. Indoor storage is always the better option; the pool is a last resort for plastic items only if you truly have nowhere else to put them.

Leave the pool uncovered

It seems counterintuitive, but covering the pool before a hurricane usually costs you a cover. Flying branches and debris will tear or puncture it, and a damaged cover is a far more expensive problem than debris in the water. Leaves and dirt can be cleaned out of a pool easily. Skimming is cheap; covers are not.

⚠️ Plan Ahead, Not Last-Minute

The best storm prep happens in May, not the day before landfall. Trimming trees near the pool, checking that deck drains flow freely, and keeping water chemistry consistently balanced all season means the last-minute checklist is short — and your pool recovers faster no matter what the season brings.

During the Storm: Leave it Alone

Once the weather arrives, your pool needs nothing from you — and it’s important that it gets nothing. Never go out to check on the pool during the storm, and treat the pool area as off-limits until conditions are fully safe afterwards. Standing water, downed power lines, and damaged electrical equipment are a dangerous combination, and pool decks after a storm are littered with debris and slick with mud. The pool will still be there when the weather clears. Nothing you could do mid-storm improves the outcome.

After the Storm: Recovering Your Pool

What you find afterwards depends on the storm. After a typical summer tropical system it might just be leaves, twigs, and cloudy water. After a major hurricane it can be a pool you can’t see the bottom of. Either way, the recovery sequence is the same — and the order matters.

1. Safety check before anything else

Before touching any pool equipment, look at the whole area. If the equipment pad flooded, if breakers tripped, or if there’s any sign of electrical damage, do not re-energize the system. Flooded pumps, panels, and wiring need to be inspected by a licensed electrician before power goes back on — water and pool electrics are not a place to take chances.

2. Remove debris by hand and net

Get the big material out first — branches, palm fronds, roofing fragments — using a leaf net and your hands (with gloves), not your pool vacuum. Large debris clogs skimmer lines and can jam the pump. Work from the surface down: skim what floats, then net what’s settled.

3. Still don’t drain it

Even if the water is brown and the ground is saturated, resist the urge to drain. This is actually when the risk of a popped pool is at its highest — the water table after a hurricane can stay elevated for weeks. Almost any post-storm water condition can be recovered through circulation, filtration, and chemistry. Draining is a decision for a professional to make, in rare cases, once ground conditions allow.

4. Restore circulation and run the filter hard

Once the equipment has been confirmed safe, empty the skimmer and pump baskets and get the pump running — continuously at first. Expect to clean the filter far more often than usual for the first several days; it will be doing weeks’ worth of work in a short time. 5. Shock, balance, and be patient

Test the water and expect everything to be off — heavy rain dilutes chlorine, stabilizer, and alkalinity all at once. Shock the pool, rebalance step by step, and keep testing daily. Cloudiness after a storm is normal and can take several days of filtration to clear. Along the coast — Panama City Beach, Inlet Beach, and the 30A corridor — storm surge and wind-driven salt spray add contaminants that inland pools in Chipley or Lynn Haven don’t see. Hurricane Season Pool FAQs

Should I drain my pool before a hurricane?

No — never drain your pool before a storm. The water’s weight holds the pool shell in place against rising groundwater pressure. A drained pool can lift out of the ground (“pop”), causing severe structural damage. Leave the water at its normal level; deck drains will handle rain overflow.

Should I put my patio furniture in the pool during a hurricane?

We don’t recommend it. Metal furniture can stain and corrode against the pool finish, and hard edges chip plaster and tile. Store furniture indoors or in a garage instead. If you have no indoor option at all, lightweight plastic items are the only things that should go in the water — as a last resort.

Should I cover my pool before a storm?

No. Flying debris will usually tear or puncture a cover, and replacing a damaged cover costs far more than cleaning debris out of the water. Leave the pool uncovered and plan to skim and net afterwards.

How soon can we swim after a storm?

Only once the water has been shocked, filtered, and tested back into safe ranges — typically at least a few days after a significant storm. Storm water carries contaminants, and if the pool took on floodwater or storm surge, treat it as contaminated until chemistry confirms otherwise. Clear water alone doesn’t mean safe water.

My pool turned green after the storm — is it ruined?
