What Does “CPO Certified” Actually Mean?
Do You Actually Need One?
- HOA and condo association pools
- Apartment complex pools
- Hotel, resort, and vacation-rental-community pools
- Gyms, clubs, and commercial pools
How Do You Get CPO Certified?
- Coursework covering water chemistry, filtration, pump and equipment operation, disinfection, and code requirements — typically a one- to two-day format, or a self-paced online module if you’re doing the hybrid option
- A closed-book, proctored exam at the end of the course, usually multiple choice
- A passing score (generally 75% or higher, though this can vary slightly by provider) to receive your certificate
You don’t need any prior pool industry experience to enroll — the course is built for beginners as much as career technicians.
What Does It Cost in 2026?
PHTA set a $390 tuition floor for CPO courses in 2026, and most providers price seats in the $390–$450 range depending on format and location. That fee generally covers course materials, the exam, and your initial certificate.
How Long Does CPO Certification Last?
A CPO certification is valid for five years from the end of the month it was issued. To renew, you’ll need to log 24 hours of PHTA-approved continuing education and submit your recertification application by December 31 of the year your certification expires. Miss that window and there’s a 90-day grace period — but re-certifying during the grace period adds a $100 late fee on top of the standard renewal cost, so it’s worth calendaring the deadline well ahead of time.
